Fumarolic deposits (sufur and other minerals) and gasses escaping the ground around the crater of La Fossa volcano (background) on Vulcano Island, the southernmost of the Eolian Islands north of Sicily. The volcano has its name from the Roman God of Fire, Vulcanus, which suggests that it had been very active at that time. Its last eruption occurred during 1888-90. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)
