A pahoehoe lava flow from Kilauea volcano that has destroyed and replaced what was once dense rainforest forest, seen about 20 years later. Some large pieces of tree trunks that were not burnt (as they fell onto the already cooled surface of the flow) still lie around, but also small ferns and other pioneer plants show are present. However, it will still take many decades if not centuries for this land to become rainforest again. (Photo: Tom Pfeiffer)
